Public Skating at Fenway Park

Winter Classic in Boston - 2010

Yes, you read that right . . . that's Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox.  Normally a baseball field, not an ice skating rink!

But on January 1, 2010, the Boston Bruins will play the Philadelphia Flyers in the National Hockey League's Winter Classic at Fenway Park.

1/1/10 update:  A dramatic Winter Classic victory for the Bruins!  Less than 2 minutes after going into overtime to break a 1-1 tie, the Bruins' Marco Sturm made the winning 2-1 score.   What a way to start the new decade!

In a special moment, legendary players Bobby Orr and Bobby Clarke joined the Bruins and the Flyers on the ice.

Spotted in the stands were Olympic gold medal hockey stars Jim Craig, Dave Silk, Dick Rodenhiser, and Mike Eruzione, and even Red Sox owner Larry Lucchino, wearing a Bruins shirt.

James Taylor sang the American national anthem and Daniel Powter sang the Canadian national anthem.  Denis Leary and Lenny Clarke led the crowd in a round of "Sweet Caroline."  And in the spirit of Fenway big-game tradition, local Celtic punk rockers the Dropkick Murphys belted out "I'm Shipping Up to Boston" right before the puck dropped.

Read this lucky skater's wonderful story:  Ice Skating at Fenway

For the first time ever in the history of the ball park, Boston residents will get to skate at Fenway Park.

For these events, Fenway will be transformed.  The ice rink is expected to stretch from first to third base, covering much of the outfield.  Ice-making equipment will arrive on December 10 and the temporary rink should be ready by December 18 and will stay up through January 10.

In addition to the Winter Classic, a Hockey East doubleheader will take place on January 8.  The Northeastern University and University of New Hampshire women's teams will face off at 4 pm, followed by Boston College and Boston University men's teams at 7:30pm.

Last summer, Boston's Mayor Thomas Menino announced 2 days of public skating during the Winter Classic.  12/15/09 update - Dates and tickets for Public Skating in Fenway Park before and after the Winter Classic

The rink is also being rented during free periods at an hourly rate of $7,500 - $10,000 - yes, you read that right, and yes, that's per hour.

One way to maybe get to skate on the ice at Fenway for much less - and help support military veterans with traumatic brain injuries - is to enter the Red Sox Foundation Holiday Raffle by buying a $10 ticket.  A drawing on January 4 will produce 75 lucky winners who will each get to bring a guest and skate in Fenway on Saturday, January 9, from 9am - 10am.

The public skating schedule hasn't been announced yet, so stay tuned for more details.   Update: announcement about schedule and tickets   And start sharpening your skates!

Just one more reason why Boston is a great sports town.
