I may be coming to Boston from Sept 1 to the 4th - Are shops, markets, restaurants open on Sept. 3 Labour Day? - I want to go to Cheers, go on a Harbour cruise, Boston Common, etc. Also are the trolleys also working as I would like to go on the hop on hop off trolley.
Thank you for the information - Marion
Susan's reply: Yes, absolutely, everything is open throughout Labor Day weekend (Friday, Sat., Sunday, Monday), as it is a very big holiday weekend here. We get lots of visitors from other places, and it's a lively and fun time to be in the city - sort of a last fling with summer.
The weather is often gorgeous, so Labor Day Weekend is a perfect time for things like Boston Harbor cruises, strolling along Harborwalk by the water or the Rose Kennedy Greenway, exploring Faneuil Hall Marketplace/Quincy Market, walking along the Freedom Trail. You probably already know this, but we actually have 2 Cheers - the recreation of the TV program set in Faneuil Hall Marketplace (and a popular bar in its own right), and the "original" Cheers at the edge of Beacon Hill which appeared in exterior shots in the TV program, but the inside looks totally different - also a fun bar, though. Keep in mind that by law, Boston bars have to serve food, and most serve up very tasty fare.
Another fun thing to do is go on a tour - there's even a Boston Movie Mile tour which is a walking tour around Beacon Hill - and it ends up at Cheers.
I'm going to add links to a few pages on BDG that may help with your planning.
