I am curious to know if First Night Boston will do fireworks like last year at 7:00pm on the Commons? We hadn't known about it ahead of time, but worked out well because we could get our young kids home for their usual bedtime - great way to avoid meltdowns after a fun day.
Thanks
Susan's reply: Yes, although the Family Fireworks on the Common are not on the First Night Boston official schedule because they're are separate event, they will take place this year (12/31/11) at 6:45pm. Times vary slightly from year to year.
The First Night entertainment and activities designed especially to appeal to kids take place prior to this time. The Grand Procession - a huge parade - kicks off at Hynes Convention Center on Boylston Street and marches toward Boston Common, turning left at Charles Street and then right at Beacon Street.
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and the Mugar Foundation sponsor a Family Friendly show on Boston Common starting at 6pm with an ice skating show at the Frog Pond ice rink. Free public skating takes place after the ice show. If you don't have skates with you, you can rent them at the rink (usual rental charges apply). A terrific 12-minute fireworks show at 6:45pm over Boston Common makes a nice family-friendly conclusion for everyone who wants to get their younger children home for a early bedtime, plus anyone else who's attending other parties later in the evening.
NECN (New England Cable News) broadcasts the ice skating show and other New Years Eve events starting at 6pm.
First Night events and entertainment throughout the remainder of the evening focus on teens and adults. Another spectacular fireworks display takes place over Boston Harbor at midnight to welcome the New Year.
First Night Boston is really special - enjoy!
