BostonTalks Investigates: Healthcare for Refugee Women
Oct. 12, 2016, 7-9pm WGBH Studios, One Guest Street, Brighton, MA 02135 $10 for tickets
At the end of 2015, a staggering number of people around the world—one out of every 113 people, to be exact—were estimated to be forcibly displaced from their homes. Half of these people, labeled asylum seekers, internally displaced persons or refugees, are women, according to the United Nations. Join WGBH's Beat the Press TV host, Emily Rooney (@EmilyRooneyWGBH) and experienced Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) aid workers for a discussion about the unique and pressing health challenges facing displaced women. Learn how MSF provides family planning, obstetric care, and medical treatment for sexual violence to patients on the move or living in refugee camps—and how MSF offers mental health care, a crucial component of treatment for survivors of violence.
Hear from Anissa Dickerson (@AEMDickerson) Certified Nurse Midwife; Dr. Chip Hunter, Field Coordinator and Mental Health Activities Manager; Katharine Hutchinson, DrPH, CNM, Senior Technical Advisor for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights at Pathfinder International, and WGBH Senior Investigative Reporter Phillip Martin (@phillipWGBH).
Guests also have the opportunity to experience MSF’s new virtual reality documentaries, stepping inside the personal stories of three people forced to flee their homes in Burundi, Syria, and Honduras in search of safety.
This talk is part of MSF's new interactive outdoor exhibition, Forced From Home, shown on Boston's Long Wharf from October 15 through 23, 2016.
