How late will Boston's trains be running on New Year's Eve? We are planning to come down from Maine for the evening, spend the night then head to the Pats game on Sunday.
Susan's reply: Wow, that sounds like a wonderful way to celebrate the end of the old year and the beginning of the new year.
Good news about the Boston subway (the "T"). The MBTA has just posted its New Year's Eve schedule for both the subway and the commuter rail lines. Go to www.mbta.com to find it - you'll see the link to the New Year's Eve schedule in the lower left.
The good news is that the T will run until 2pm, and commuter rail lines will offer late service.
The First Night fireworks over Boston Harbor will end before those times - but...LOTS of people take public transportation into the city on New Year's Eve, so expect the subways to be packed, at least in some locations.
If you're going to any of the private parties in Boston bars or dance clubs, they have to stop serving alcohol at 2am (and therefore shut down then or soon thereafter). If you stay until 2am, you'll still miss the last subway service, so your best bet will be a cab - which will be hard to get, or making sure that you are withing close walking distance of your hotel and haven't drunk too much (Boston streets wind around - it's easier to get lost than you might expect).
The difference in fare between the T ($2) and a taxi (usually at least $20, including tip) is obviously significant, so the consequences of missing the last train keep most people cognizant of the time.
Since you're going to Gillette Stadium for the Patriot's game, you probably know about the Patriots Train from North Station - but here's the link to the information just in case you need it.
Have a wonderful weekend here in Boston and at Gillette Stadium, and best wishes for the New Year!
