Boston Event Calendar

August 2010

Check out the Boston Events Calendar for August to find top concerts, attractions, sports, and other things to do during this last glorious month of summer in the city.

Local groups Aerosmith and the J Geils Band perform together for the first time ever in an August event at Fenway Park, creating even more excitement than a Red Sox game!  However, you'll find plenty of home games for August on the Red Sox schedule, so you'll find a lot to cheer about in the famed ballpark this month.

Boston theater moves outdoors for Shakespeare on the Common, one of the top picks on the August Event Calendar.  And free Friday flicks continue on the Esplanade as well as in the Boston Public Library.

The Chinese Moon Festival, or Mid-Autumn Festival, dates back more than 3,000 years in China.  This popular event traditionally falls on the 15th day of the 8th Lunar month, usually late September/early October.

Various stories are associated with the festival, such as the legend of Chang'e, the immortal Lady of the Moon, and the overthrow of the Mongol rulers in 1368 when a rebel leader distributed mooncakes (which Mongols didn't eat) with messages hidden inside saying "Kill the Mongols."

In Boston's Chinatown, however, the Moon Festival takes place in mid-August, and is one of the biggest annual celebrations.  Start with dim sum, and then enjoy martial arts performances, lion dances, firecrackers, folk dances, and lots of vendor booths.
