Azure Restaurant

Enjoy contemporary American cuisine at Azure, a favorite among Back Bay restaurants

Azure Restaurant, located in the Lenox Hotel in Boston, is a favorite among Back Bay restaurants for its contemporary cuisine featuring local New England seafood and local produce.

Azure is also one of the top Boston seafood restaurants, even though you'll find plenty of meat choices on the menu as well.

As a bonus, Azure is also one of the most attractive restaurants in Back Bay.

October 2009 update:  As of this month, Azure has closed and has been replaced by City-Table, a new restaurant specializing in updated American classics made with fresh and organic ingredients.  More about City-Table

What happens when a chef/artist creates his own seafood vision?

You'll be delighted to discover the answer to this question at Azure, chef/artist Robert Fathman's culinary creation.

Azure features contemporary American cuisine - fresh ingredients prepared with subtle globally-influenced seasonings.

You'll notice a focus on fresh seafood - including less-common offerings, such as the mouth-watering almond encrusted sand dabs.

Appetizers such as seared sea scallops with watercress salad and ruby red grapefruit shine, and so do the main courses.

Imagine cornmeal-coated trout with cheesy white polenta, creamed corn hash, and rock shrimp . . . or baked salmon with crabmeat sauce, fava beans, pea shoots, and mint salad.

Beef-lovers need not worry.  You'll find a couple of succulent steak choices, plus beef and chicken.

For example, you can choose a grilled cowboy steak with pureed potatoes, blue cheese fondue, smoked onion rings, and watercress salad.

Vegetarians will find fewer choices - but the grilled veggie and salad plate is loaded with tantalizing options, and when you add perhaps the artisan cheese platter or the grilled artichoke salad, you'll be happy.

What Should You Choose?

One of the things that I enjoy about this stylish restaurant is the wide range of appetizers, plates to share, and even sandwiches on the dinner menu.

For example, you might choose a fried cod sandwich or Kobe beef burger and then add a frisee and Belgian endive salad.  And who can resist Maine lobster salad with avocado and papaya?  Pair it with the lobster soup and perhaps a bibb lettuce salad for a wonderful meal.

And What About the Art?

So where does the artist part of Chef Fathman's creativity get displayed?  Well, you'll recognize it visually in the restaurant's design - the blue stained glass panel behind the 8-seat bar contrasts spectacularly with the golden ambiance of the dining area.

But you'll also see his love of abstract impressionism influences how he combines ingredients in unexpected ways to enhance flavors and give lucky diners new ways to look at American cuisine.
